私の英語の学び方
英語を勉強し始めてから約30年の歳月が流れました。英語を勉強するのが好きかと問われましたら、ノー時々イエスです。大
学時代の専攻は英文学でしたが、入学後、英語への熱意は萎えました。多くの授業が私の興味を刺激するものではなかったのです。リズム、発音、シェイクスピア英語などなど、まったくもって退屈でした。そのときの私の目標は、世界中の人とコミュケーションを取ることと明確。そんな座っているだけの勉強は英語を学ぶ意欲を失わせました。
そういうわけで、卒業するときには、英語を使って仕事をしていこうなどと考えてもいなかったです、同級生の多くは望んでいましたが。
しかし、将来何が起こるか誰が分かるでしょう。
卒業後、グラフィックの技術を身に付けた私は、DTPとして働いていこうとしていました。幸か不幸か、某アメリカの企業から内定をいただくことに。多くの志願者がいた中、なぜ私を雇うことにしたか。英語アレルギーがなかったのが私だけだったのです。他の方たちはDTPのプロフェッショナルではあったけれども、仕事中に英語を使うことに後ずさりしたようです。面接官たちが思ったように、私に英語アレルギーはないでしょう。
しかし、実際には、仕事で英語を使ったことなどありません。メールに会議に接待に。。。全ての責務が私に英語を強要します。社内公用語は英語であり、日本支社には日本人がいましたが、同僚と上司は外国人。ビジネス英語を学ばざるをえなくなりました。怒涛の日々がこのときから始まったのです。
私以外の日本人社員は、英語が話されている国で暮らしていた方たちばかりなので、仕事で英語を使うことに問題はありませんでした。私は日本にいながらにして、彼らと同じレベルになんとか達しようともがきました。
手始めに、現状の英語力を知るためにTOEICを受験。その結果を見たとき、一人で勉強していくにはこのスコアは悪すぎると、ビジネス英語の学校に入ることにしました。
英語力の向上にはプロの手が必要に思えたのです。もちろん、自宅でも1冊のテキストだけを使って勉強しました。1冊を繰り返し繰り返し使いました。読んで書いて読んで書いて読んで書いて。。。一種の暗記法です。私はもともと暗記を得意としていたので、使えるフレーズを暗記するのが賢明だと思ったのです。毎朝４時半ぐらいに起き、テキストに取り組む。就業後は学校に急ぎ、授業を受けました。加えて土曜日は授業や、外国人講師たちと過ごすために学校に滞在。ときどき、外国人たちが催すパーティにも参加です。英語は完璧ではないけれども、話すことをためらっている時間などありませんでした。英語を話すどんな機会も逃さなかったです。
同時に、通勤時にはジャパンタイムズを読むようにしていました。２か月に１度は自分の英語力を知るためにTOEICを受験。そんな日々が数年続きました。私のテキストは使い古されてボロボロに、そしてこれが私の英語力を飛躍的に向上させる鍵になったのです。たった１冊のテキストを繰り返し使うことで、英文法に専念できました。蓄積された英語のフレーズと単語のおかげで、英語話者とどんなトピックでも会話ができるようになりました。
日本支社を去って約12年の月日が過ぎました。ずっと自分の英語力を死なせたくないと思っています。
そのために、高レベルなテキストを何度も使い、OECで少なくとも週に１度はネイティブの講師たちと会話するようにしています。加えて、海外ドラマを見たりペーパーバックを読むことは、まさに英語力の定着に一役買っています。もちろん、定期的にTOEICを受け、自分の英語力を確認しています。

My Story about How to Learn English
It has been almost 30 years since I started to study English. If I am asked whether or not I like studying English, the answer is no sometimes yes. Although my major was English literature when I was a college student, my enthusiasm for English waned after entering the college. Many classes didn’t stimulate my interest toward English. Rhythm, pronunciation, Shakespeare English, etc.. were really boring to me. At that time, my final destination was clearly to communicate with people all over the world. Those sedentary studies discouraged me to learn English. That’s why, I didn’t want to build my career using English when my college days were over although most of my classmates wanted to do.
But nobody knows what will happen in the future.
After graduating from the college, I was about to start my career as a desktop publisher after getting skills of graphic software. Fortunately, or unfortunately, I received a job letter from an American company. The reason why they hired me for the position although many candidates wanted it was that I was only person who didn’t have allergy to English! Other candidates were a professional as a desktop publisher but they were reluctant to use English during the work. As the interviewers thought, I wouldn’t have any allergy to English. But in fact, I had never been under the situation which was required to use English while working. E-mails, meeting, entertaining… all of my duties forced me to use English. The communication tool in the office was only English and the Japan branch had some Japanese staff, but my coworkers and boss were not Japanese. There was no way to study business English. My tough days started since then.
All of the Japanese staff except me had lived in the English spoken countries so they could command of English on business. I managed to reach to the same level staying in Japan. First of all, I took TOEIC test to see my real English skill. When the result came out, I decided to join a Business English school because my TOEIC score was too poor to study alone. Professional advice seemed essential to improve my English. Of course, I studied at home using a text book. I used one text book repeatedly. Reading, writing, reading, writing, reading, writing…it was a kind of rote memorization. As I was good at memorizing by nature, I thought it would be better to memorize useful phrases. Every morning, I woke up around 4:30 a.m. and tackled with the text book. After working, I rushed to the English school to take classes. In addition, I stayed at the school on Saturdays for classes and getting touch with native teachers. Sometimes I joined parties organized by foreigners. There was no time to hesitate to speak English even though my English didn’t work so well! I didn’t miss any chances to use English. At the same time, I read Japan Times while commuting. Every single month, I took TOEIC test to see how to improve my English. That kind of days lasted for a few years. My text book was teared off due to the heavy using, and this was the key point for me to improve my English drastically. Using only one text book repeatedly had enabled me to concentrate on English grammars. Thanks piles of so many English phrases and words, I could have conversations about any topics with English speakers.
Almost 12 years have been passing since I left the Japan office. I have been thinking that I don’t want to lose my English. Keeping it is to try one advanced English text book so many times and have a communication with native speakers at O.E.C. at least once a week. Besides them, watching English drama and reading paperbacks really help me to stay my English. Of course, I take TOEIC test to check my level on regular basis.
