My Story(英語)

Country of Origin: United Kingdom

I’m into pro-wrestling, video games, and photography

How’s it going? I’m Sean from Tamworth, England.

I have always known Japanese culture was something I would love to experience. One of the only countries in the world which offers the height of modern technology yet at the same time, years of rich history, from tea ceremonies to the ancient Samurai.

Growing up, Japanese culture was inherent in almost everything I enjoyed. It started with a Saturday morning cartoon called “Samurai Pizza Cats” (キャッ党忍伝てやんでえ). Then it continued to spread into other things I loved, including video games such as “Shenmue” (シェンムー ) and movies such as “Akira” (アキラ). Eventually I started to listen to Japanese music, and before I knew it, I was trying to learn Japanese to understand the lyrics. Japan had become a part of my life, and I’d never stepped foot in the country!

In 2014 I visited Japan for the first time, spending three weeks in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka during cherry blossom season. The whole experience really changed my perception of other cultures, and took many of my assumptions and expectations to task.

I encountered a lot of challenges during my stay; the simple things such as, asking for directions, catching a bus, or ordering food in a restaurant. However, overcoming these challenges only enhanced my experience further. Indeed, one of the wonderful things about being abroad is that even the most mundane of everyday tasks have an air of mystery about them.

In September 2015 I decided to move to Japan. I couldn’t think of anything more beneficial for my Japanese linguistic and cultural development than living in the country I love so much. I am well aware that learning a language is about much more than memorising grammar and vocabulary; a language is a way of life, and by being here in Japan I can immerse myself fully and give something back to the Japanese people who have inspired me so much. I look forward to teaching you English, sharing your experiences, and learning from you all very soon at OEC!
